(New York, June 21, 2022) – Sir John Soane’s Museum Foundation, the New York-based nonprofit that supports Sir John Soane’s Museum in London, announced today that Bill Appleton has been selected as the foundation’s new Executive Director, effective immediately.
“The Board of Directors is delighted to announce the appointment of this innovative and seasoned leader,” said Paul Whalen, Chairman of the Board. “So many areas of his professional background and education come together to make a perfect fit. We are certainly excited to be able to work closely with him to grow the Foundation’s capacities and regional reach.”
Appleton’s experience in the cultural realm is extensive and varied. He is the founding principal of Appleton Arts Consulting, and provided executive search and strategic planning services to major non-profit organizations across the U.S., including the Association of Art Museum Curators, the Art Students League of New York, the Arts Council of Princeton, the Brooklyn Public Library, and the Museum Trustee Association.
Prior to consulting, he had a distinguished museum career as the director of education and engagement for the Pierpont Morgan Library, Saint Louis Art Museum, and Rubin Museum of Art. Appleton received his B.A. with honors from Wesleyan University and an M.A. in Classics from Brown University.
