Join us in preserving A Rake’s Progress (c. 1733–1735), William Hogarth’s iconic series of eight paintings that tells the story of Tom Rakewell, a young man who squanders his fortune. Since coming to Sir John Soane’s Museum, these works have inspired generations of visitors, architects, designers, and artists, including Igor Stravinsky and David Hockney.
The restoration marks the 200th anniversary of the Picture Room, home to over 100 works from Soane’s personal collection. Over three years, expert conservators will assess and restore each painting in collaboration with the National Gallery in London and with your support, expert conservators will restore the paintings and expand access.

The project is supported by an exciting research collaboration between Sir John Soane’s Museum and the National Gallery, London, building on advanced technical imaging first carried out by Tate in 2021. Using state-of-the-art digital technologies, including X-ray fluorescence scanning, we will analyse Hogarth’s works in detail, guiding vital conservation efforts and revealing new insights into his techniques and materials.
